The Allegan Area Arts Council's mission
is to initiate and stimulate
interest and participation
in the arts for the Allegan area.

To achieve that mission, the AAAC will establish and promote an organization that:
  • implements a communication network that reaches throughout the Allegan area and connects our activities to surrounding areas and communities.
  • establishes a volunteer network of individuals and businesses that supports the goals of the AAAC.
  • creates an instructional volunteer network of artists, teachers, individuals, businesses and organizations that will be made available as mentors to the Allegan area.
  • negotiates with existing facilities in the Allegan area for the use of clean, safe, ADA accessible and properly insured structures to be used by the volunteer network of artists, teachers, individuals, businesses and organizations in promoting the arts.
  • generates operational funds through donations, fund raising activities and grants to insure the financial stability of the AAAC.

Our brief history:  In the spring of 1997, the forty or so caring individuals who attended the first area arts planning meeting were from all walks of life.  One of those present, Paula Mintek, shares with us that this common belief emerged from that gathering:  participation in the creative arts will improve any life and, as a result of expanding art options, the community is improved and enriched, as well.

The IRS granted the group non-profit 501C3 status in July of 1998.  A generous contribution from the Perrigo Foundation and several community foundations helped make the Arts Council a reality.  The organization's membership grew even as founding board members retired after writing a cultural plan for the city of Allegan.  This plan established a successful summer arts program and hosted countless workshops and classes.  Their work was done.

Douglas Langhorst became Chairperson of the Art Council in 2007 and a new business plan was adopted.  This website is a direct result of his vision to increase membership and county-wide support of the arts.  Our attempt to connect with other Allegan County non-profits and  the larger  arts' community throughout the state and beyond can best be achieved by reaching out in this manner.

A dedicated volunteer network of instructors and facilities is constantly being updated to fulfill the AAAC mission.  The current Board of Directors works diligently  to generate funds through donations, fund raising activities and grants to insure the financial stability of the organization.

The task of insuring the continued success of this organization, made possible by the hard work and dedication of so many, is a challenge we gladly accept.  The Board of Directors:
